Today, January 3, 2025, Melanie “Mel” Ruga marks her third anniversary with E. O. Habhegger, a milestone on her journey of perseverance, adaptability, and breaking barriers. As the first female manager of E. O. Habhegger’s Orlando branch, Mel’s story is a testament to hard work, determination, and the courage to embrace new opportunities.
Growing up in South Jersey, Mel’s childhood was shaped by a can-do attitude and the challenge of keeping up with her three brothers. This upbringing instilled in her both determination and resilience that has guided her through various life shifts and challenges. Today, as a hands-on leader, Mel demonstrates every day that gender is no barrier to excellence.
From Fine Dining to Warehousing
Before joining E. O. Habhegger, Mel’s life was far removed from the petroleum and industrial supply industry. Living in Ontario, Canada, she thrived in the fine dining restaurant scene—a fast-paced, dynamic environment that allowed her to showcase her work ethic and adventurous spirit. However, the pandemic upended her life, disrupting her career and prompting her to leave Canada due to restrictions that prevented her from seeing her family. She returned to New Jersey to reconnect with her loved ones, including finally meeting her newest nephew for the first time. Mel initially tried local restaurant jobs, but they proved unreliable during COVID-19. Although her family suggested she take the open warehouse position at E. O. Habhegger, she resisted the idea at first.
Eventually, Mel heeded her family’s suggestion and joined E. O. Habhegger in January 2022. For the first six months, she took on various warehouse tasks, including driving delivery trucks, painting bathrooms, and organizing spaces. “I didn’t expect to like it, but I fell in love with the team and the culture,” she admits.
Leadership in Action
Fast forward to today, and Mel has brought a wave of positive change to E. O. Habhegger’s Orlando branch, which she began managing just two months ago. Her leadership style is hands-on and inclusive, rooted in her belief that “I’ll never ask someone to do something I wouldn’t do myself.”
Mel’s “female energy,” as she calls it, has reimagined the warehouse and office layout into a cleaner, more organized, and welcoming space. By combining underutilized rooms into a unified parts and office area and implementing small weekly improvements, she has transformed the workspace into an efficient and comfortable environment. The changes have not only improved aesthetics but also enhanced productivity and workflow. Contractors and delivery drivers frequently comment on the changes, particularly appreciating the chairs she added to the entryway. “Now they sit down, chat, and take a breather. It’s small, but it makes a difference,” she says.
Breaking Stereotypes and Inspiring Growth
As the first woman to manage an E. O. Habhegger branch, Mel is keenly aware of the stereotypes she’s breaking. She’s always believed in proving that women can excel in roles traditionally held by men.
Mel’s determination to challenge gender norms has been a hallmark of her career. She credits her mentors—Chris, Jody, and Pete—for their patience and encouragement. “Mistakes here are seen as learning opportunities,” she says, emphasizing the company’s collaborative and respectful environment. “If every workplace were like E. O. Habhegger, the world would be a different place.”
Finding Home in Orlando
Although moving to Florida was unexpected, Mel has embraced her new community with enthusiasm. Living south of Orlando in a vibrant, predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, she marvels at the cultural diversity and thriving food scene. “It’s completely different from New Jersey, but I love discovering new things here,” she says.
Gratitude for the Opportunity
Reflecting on her journey, Mel is quick to express gratitude. “Timing is everything, but it’s also about having a great team and support system,” she shares. While she credits her mentors and E. O. Habhegger’s culture for her success, it’s clear that her skills, work ethic, and determination are also driving forces behind her achievements.
Looking ahead, Mel is excited to continue improving the Orlando branch and fostering a positive work culture. She approaches this with her personal motto in mind: “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” By steadily focusing on meaningful changes, she’s making a lasting impact—and here at E. O. Habhegger– we couldn’t agree more.
Here’s to three years of breaking barriers and building a brighter future. Congratulations, Melanie! Thanks for your hard work and dedication!
